Year 11 Entrance Exam

John Monash Science School Year 11 Entrance Exam

The tutor has been tutoring since the mid-1990s. It is the view of the tutor that to have a chance of being successful at entering John Monash Science School at Year 11 level the student needs to do at least Year 11 Maths (preferably the more difficult maths i.e. Year 11 Maths Methods and/or General Maths Advanced) and at least Year 11 Science (preferably the more difficult science i.e. Year 11 Physics and/or Chemistry).

By considering this, the tutor suggests that to increase the chances of achieving high academic results and impressing the John Monash Science School administration, the student should:

1. Undertake the Year 8 – 10 Accelerated Maths and Science Group Classes, which are runned by the tutor, when the student is in Year 9, or no later than Year 10. So to ensure that the student is proficient in all aspects of Maths and Science up to and including Year 10. The Year 8 - 10 Accelerated Maths and Science Group Classes will run from February to May. The times at which these group classes will occur are:

Year 8 – 10 Maths:
Every Sunday 2pm - 6pm (Starts 3 February 2019)
Year 8 – 10 Science:
Every Saturday 12pm – 3pm (Starts 2 February 2019)

2. Undertake Year 11 Accelerated Maths and Science Group Classes, which are runned by the tutor. So to ensure that the student is proficient in all aspects of Maths and Science up to and including Year 11. The Year 11 Accelerated Maths and Science Group Classes will run from February to May. The times at which these group classes will occur are:

Year 11 Maths Methods:
Every Saturday 3pm - 5pm (Starts 2 February 2019)
Year 11 Chemistry:
Every Sunday 12pm - 2pm (Starts 3 February 2019) Year 11 Physics: Every Sunday 10am - 12pm (Starts 3 February 2019)

3. If possible, undertake Year 12 Accelerated Maths and Science Group Classes, which are runned by the tutor, so to further increase the chances of getting selected to enter John Monash Science School. Remember you are in direct competition with other students to secure one of the “limited places in Year 11” as mentioned by the John Monash Science School Website. The Year 12 Accelerated Maths and Science Group Classes run, every year, from the first week of December to the last week of January.

Of course, for the student to be successful in the English section of the Entrance Exam, the student will require adequate tuition in English.

By doing the above, plus a copy of recent school reports (which would have been boosted after having done the above stated Year 8-12 Accelerated Maths and Science group classes), it should increase the probability of being accepted at John Monash Science School.

If the student is asked to do an interview, one possible way in which the student can prepare him or herself for the interview is to go to the Monash University webpage detailing the:

“Engineering and IT Leadership Program – School of Engineering”

This webpage includes a 14 minute video where Monash University students discuss, amongst other things, their aims, goals and leadership aspirations for the future.

To further increase the chance of being selected at JMSS the student needs to have academic achievements, but must also demonstrate co-curricular involvement and achievement.

This usually means significant achievement in one or more areas of co-curricular involvement such as sport, music, debating, and performing arts.
